More on Meteora
Meteora - A place to experience our faith to God and his wonderful creation.
2008-05 Meteora
There are six remaining monasteries, in which 2 was closed for the day. However we managed to visit/walk past 5 of them.
More info from Mapping Europe
- The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron
- Took 9am bus there. The bus dropped right outside the monastery, however, it's closed for the day.
- The Holy Monastery of Varlaam
- First one we VISITED
- The Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas
- Only see it from far, nobody there... also not on our way, skipped it.
- The Holy Monastery of Rousanou/St. Barbara
- There we encoutered the greedy black cat. From here, we walked the short cut to the road leading to another two monasteries. 5km away. Road closed for repair, only constuction trucks there...
- The Holy Monastery of St. Stephen
- Run by nuns. Very nice garden.
- The Monastery of Holy Trinity
- Last one, however, not much inside, however the outside is the most spectacular.
- From here, 1/2 hour road downhill direct to Kalampaka. The trip end with a Greek salad treat at Koka-Roka.
To visit, there is a strict dress code if you want to visit the monasteries. Men must wear long pants and women long skirts. Sleeveless shirts are not allowed. There's elastic skirts for visitors who wear shorts...
To go to Meteora, most travelling books would recommend taking bus. But to me, the Athens bus station is an awful place though there's 5 buses/day to Trikala then to Kalampaka. A better way is to take ordinary train, there's a direct service leave Athens at around 8 am, at 10 Euro, i.e. 1/2 of bus ticket price. Journey takes about 5 hour. If taking intercity, there's a need to change train at a 荒蕪 place and cost twice at much. Train timetable can be check through Deusche Bahn website (yes, they have the most comprehensive timetable in entire Europe).
